Double Bass Congratulations!

Regents Academy 7th grader Mason Baker auditioned and has been serving as double bass principal with the East Texas Youth Philharmonic Orchestra this year. The ETYO, based in Tyler, is under the direction of Dr. Gene Moon.

TOWA Essay Contest Winners

Congratulations to our students who won this year’s TOWA (Texas Outdoor Writers Association) essay contest out of approximately 100 middle school entries from across the state.

Holden Kelly, 6th grade student of Mrs. Tanya Kelly, won first place and was awarded a laptop computer at their annual conference. Caroline Alders, 8th grade student of Mrs. Sherry Wiggins, placed second and was awarded a $100 monetary prize. Lilly Hook, 8th grade student of Mrs. Sherry Wiggins, placed third and was awarded a $25 monetary prize. We are proud of our students and their teachers for their hard work and extra effort. Great job!

TOWA 2017 winners 2.24.17

Three Regents Academy students won all three places in this year’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Patriot’s Pen essay contest among all 6th-8th grade students in Nacogdoches County. Students submitted essays with the theme, “The America I Believe In” to the local post last fall, and Mr. Don Kirkley with VFW Post 3893 recently came to the school to present our students their awards. Eighth graders Caroline Alders and Sophie Jordan won first and second places respectively, and seventh grade Grant Cooper won third place for their Patriot’s Pen essays. Caroline’s essay also placed first at the district-level contest.

Senior Sarah Grace Alders placed third for her audio essay with this year’s theme, “My Responsibility to America” in the VFW Voice of Democracy high school contest. All four students were awarded monetary prizes ranging from $25 to $500.

Four Regents students qualified for the regional competition of the National History Bee: Mason Rasberry, Kelso McEntire, Cate Baker, and Ella Li. It was a great honor for these students to join the competition in Houston on February 17, 2017.

Mason and Kelso each made it to the Championship Round (top 8) of their age divisions. In addition, we are proud to announce that Mason, Kelso, and Ella qualified for the national competition in Atlanta in June.

Great Job, Spellers!

Congratulations to sixth grader Noah Satir! He placed third out of a field of twelve students from our five-county area last Saturday at the official Scripps Spelling Bee sponsored by the Lufkin Kiwanis Club. Prior to the individual bee, our 4th grade team (Seth Lekas-captain, Ben Satir, Jacob Lekas) and 8th grade team (Liane Muir-captain, Leah Vermillion, Caroline Alders) earned 2nd place trophies after more than four intense hours of spelling words ranging from tutu to charpoy.

Congratulations to all of our class teams! Our students represented Regents Academy well. We are proud of all of you!

Congratulations to Regents Academy senior Wesley Young. Wesley has been named a Commended Student in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2015 competition and took the PSAT during their junior year.

Student Eagle Awards

Congratulations to the recipients of the 2016 Student Eagle Awards: in the 5th-6th grades, Anna Claire Powers; in the 7th-8th grades, Abigail Powers, and in the 9th-12th grades, Luke Higginbotham.

Nominated by their teachers and chosen by the administration, these students distinguished themselves by their exemplary conduct, academic achievement, and positive attitude toward school. We thank the Lord for them and for their families.

2016 TAPPS Awards

The Regents Academy high school TAPPS (Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools) team has completed this year with a number of awards. Several students earned music awards, including seven students who earned Superior ratings for their instrumental solos (Jake Hill-violin; Anne Elisabeth Alders-flute; Sarah Grace Alders-piano; Kyla Alders-violin; Emma Terrell-piano; Grace DeKerlegand-violin; Kaden Harman-piano), and the Regents Academy girls ensemble earned a Superior rating for their Sacred Ensemble performance at the State contest in Killeen. Ensemble members include Elise Landrum, Annaleigh Andrews, Abby Powers, Grace DeKerlegand, Alex William, Sydney and Lindley Bryant, Emma and Anabelle Terrell, and Kyla, Anne Elisabeth and Sarah Grace Alders. The ensemble is accompanied by Kaden Harman (piano) and Jake Hill (violin).

Additionally, many team members placed in their individual events at the State speech & academic and art championships held in Waco. Academic/Speech/Art winners include: Sarah Grace Alders (3rd-Spelling, 4th-Seek & Sketch-color, 5th-Math, 6th-Number Sense, 7th-Literary Criticism); Kyla Alders (2nd-Original Oratory, Literary Criticism, 7th-Duet Acting with Avery Gound; 8th-Advanced Math); Caleb Henry (4th-Original Oratory, Advanced Math); Wesley Young (2nd-Calculator, 5th-Ready Writing, 6th-Current Events &Issues); Luke Riley (4th-B&W drawing); Alex Williams (5th-B&W photo, 6th-B&W photo; HM-On-site drawing); Aaron Bertke (6th-Calculator); Taylor Favro (7th-Seek & Sketch-color); Avery Gound (7th-Duet Acting with Kyla).

National History Bee Competitors

Five Regents Academy students competed in the National History Bee’s regional competition in Houston last weekend: 6th grader Kelso McEntire, and 8th graders Skeeter Gilbreath, Nathan Landrum, Robert Moore, and Conner Young. The National History Bee is sponsored by the History Channel.

Amid fierce competition, in the 8th grade division Conner won fifth and Nathan won ninth. Kelso won eighth in the sixth grade division. Way to go, guys!
