Bravo!

Regents 7th and 8th grade students performed the comedy “Fairy Tale Courtroom” for parents, grandparents, and students in three shows on April 19 and 20. It was a huge success!

Kudos to the students and to the play’s director, Mrs. Ashley Bryant. This was Regents Academy’s first dramatic presentation, and it was a credit to the students’ hard work and creativity.

Here is the cast on the set of the play.

Green Thumbs

Posted by: | Comments (0)

The second grade students are trying out their green thumbs.

The Regents second grade teacher, Mrs. Melissa Griner, has led her students to plant a vegetable garden behind the school building. The students are having a blast. Not only do they get to learn about gardening and play in the dirt, but they get to taste their hard work, as it produces delicious tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash, watermelons, and strawberries.

The class has gotten help from several members of the Regents family. Mr. Bobby Phillips (Mrs. Shannon Henry’s father and Caleb and Mitchell Henry’s grandfather) has been the class’s gardening consultant. He also tilled up the ground for the garden. Mrs. Jolene Monlezun helped the class get a grant from Walmart to buy seeds, tools, and fertilizer.

Pictured below are the second grade class and also Mrs. Griner. Just one more proof that hard work can be fun and rewarding! And another wonderful way for our students to learn about and enjoy God’s wonderful creation. The second grade class includes Levi Bertke, Abigail Freeland, Sophie Jordan, Ella Milliken, Cody Monlezun, Hayli Stanaland, Reagan Taylor,  Clayton Terrell, Connor Tolson, and Trinity Tyre.

Eagles Basketball Wrap-Up

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Here are some results of the 2011 basketball season. It was a great year for our Regents boys and girls!

Junior High Girls Team – Coached by Jill Milliken and Roy Bradley
The girls were undefeated in district play, and they also played some tough games in the city league. The team reached the quarterfinals of the Christian Schools Athletic Conference Championship bracket (12-team seed) before they lost in the final seconds to Trinity School of Texas, 18-17. Rylee Milliken had an outstanding season and was the team’s leading scorer. Kyla Alders, Kendall DeKerlegand, Michaela Hill, Megan Marshall, Sydney Williams, and Alice Bryant also made significant contributions to the team. The girls have high hopes for next year with a good group of younger players; Sarah Grace Alders, Madison Freeland, Annaleigh Andrews, Claire Culpepper, Lindley Bryant, Grace DeKerlegand, and hopefully some new faces.

Junior High Boys Team – Coached by Lee Hill and Bret Arrant
The boys had an outstanding year, remaining undefeated in district play and only a few close losses in the city league. The team also defeated the Central Heights Junior High B team. They lost in the first round of the Christian Schools Athletic Conference Championship bracket (14-team seed) but went on to win the Consolation Bracket!
Hudson Arrant and Harrison Perkins (homeschooler) both had outstanding seasons with the team. Unfortunately, Harrison’s broken hand in mid-season had an impact on the outcome of the first conference game. Akilesh Bapu and Graham Culpepper also made significant contributions to the team. Next year’s team should have a solid foundation with Aaron Bertke, Rowan Arrant, Patrick Dinan, Caleb Henry, Will Hill, Jake Hill, Colton Willhite, Wesley Young and younger boys moving up to play for the Eagles!

High School Boys Team – Coached by Mark Sowell and David Bryant
It was a year of “firsts” for our young team! We participate in TAPPS 1A District 3, playing teams in Longview, Tyler, and Henderson. Our High School boys’ team won two of their District games for the first time. Payton Andrews was selected for the TAPPS All-District First team (voted by the AD’s and coaches of the district) as he led the Eagles in scoring with an average of 18 points per game. This honor was a first for our team. Mitchell Henry and Will Alders were selected for All-District Second team for their outstanding contributions. Mitchell averaged 9 points per game and Will Alders contributed 8 points per game to the total. Ali Hosseinpour was selected for an Honorable Mention and most importantly, he received the Best Sportsman award. Another first for Regents was Timothy Marshall, who received the Newcomer Award for our district. Tim contributed 7 rebounds per game, and look out next year as Tim seems to still be growing! Our team was rounded out with contributions from Sam Alders, Aaron Bryant and Tyler Sowell.
The most important “first” for our team was their opportunity to play in a playoff game against The Geneva School in Boerne! The team travelled to San Antonio, and although they lost to a #1 seed it was an epic moment for our young team!
All of our High School players will be returning and welcoming the outstanding players moving up to High School from the eighth grade!

Akilesh Bapu, son of Dr. Dyanesh Ravindran and Kousalya Bapu, was awarded state recognition by the Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) earlier this summer. Akilesh was among those students recognized statewide for outstanding performance on either the ACT or the SAT, having scored in the top percentiles for students in the 7th grade. The Duke TIP program identifies academically talented students who may benefit from the innovative educational programs offered by Duke University.

Leftovers on the Whiteboard

Posted by: | Comments (0)

It’s the time of year a teacher begins to wonder whether or not everything’s been taught.  Sitting at my desk with a view of the whiteboard, I read the lengthy list of Latin verbs we dissected today.  My notes for our final paper are still on the board.  As we listed some main characters from the books we read this year, my students continued to express their awe of all they had completed this year.  Someone said, “That was this year!  I thought Estella happened last year!”  The names of Asian mountains, Pamirs and Tian Shan, are left on my board from the geography bee we enjoy holding at the end of the week.  Beautiful African maps that were colored and labeled by each student hang on my walls.  Piles of notebooks to be graded spill almost into the hallway.  One student, without stopping to think, called out the answer to the question about why Texas’ statehood was denied after we gained our independence from Mexico.

I’m hoping they’ve learned.  I’m hoping they’ve learned more of history, grammar and advanced mathematical procedures.  I’m hoping they’ve learned how to translate Latin sentences with relative ease.  I’m hoping they’ve learned how to get along in a world that isn’t always easy to deal with.  Most of all, I’m hoping they’ve learned that their sixth grade teacher loves them deeply!

Visiting Pastor – Dr. Alan Reed

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Dr. Alan Reed, pastor of First Baptist Church, Nacogdoches, recently visited Regents Academy. He spoke to the students and faculty at the school’s morning assembly. Dr. Reed encouraged the students to avoid the sin of gossip and to use their tongues to glorify God.

Area pastors often visit the Regents Academy campus on Fridays to share a devotional.

Regents Academy students, faculty, and parents participated in the first annual BIG Serve school-wide service project on March 26, 2010.

All students in grades K-12 spread across Nacogdoches to serve their community by partnering with Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful, Willowbrook Nursing Center, the Nacogdoches Chamber of Commerce, and Love INC. Students served senior adults, beautified downtown, painted benches along the Lanana Creek Trail, and cleaned and painted an area disabled senior adult’s home. What a great day of service it was! The students, parents, and faculty alike serve with joyful hearts and eager attitudes. The Nacogdoches community noticed.

The “BIG” in the BIG Serve stands for “Blessed in Giving.” We believe that as our students serve others, they are blessed, just as much as the ones they serve. The BIG Serve service projects were coordinated a school-wide fundraiser that has, as of April 11, raised more than $34,000 for the school building fund, directly benefiting the school’s ongoing mission and day-to-day operations.

Regents Academy is a classical and Christian school seeking to shape tomorrow’s leaders with an excellent education and Christian discipleship. Service, our students learned, is a keynote of this vision.
